With your passport in your pocket and plane tickets in hand, the world is at your fingertips. I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful to be living in the age of airplanes. What once was a faraway dream is now accessible to anyone with the time and money for travel (and you don’t actually need much money). To be honest, I don’t know who I would be without travel. Our experiences shape who we are, and our journeys become woven into the delicate threads of our souls. Since the first time I stepped off a plane into a new place, the smell of the new place, travel has become a passion. I can’t shake that wanderlust!
I can’t tell you how many days I spent dreaming about all the exotic places, drinking coconut water and swimming in the bright blue sea. My body may have been present in where I was (usually in a cold, boring place), but my mind was far away—Thailand, in particular. I wondered if I would ever live those travel dreams and was afraid that I could never do it. I felt stuck in my lifestyle. I hated being cold. I hated not being able to be FREE. I really did feel stuck.
Or was I? Could I really be trapped in a particular lifestyle? Certainly some people feel they are, but was I one of them? No, I could control my own lifestyle. What was truly important, I wondered, money or the experiences I craved? Society told me I should choose the security of a career over my dreams. But what did my heart tell me?
It only takes a decision and a lifestyle change to make your dreams a reality. Sometimes, you’ll have to work for a long time to make that happen? May be true, maybe not. Other times, the opportunity is right in front of you. Sometimes, you just have to take that deep breath and dive into a new life, a new dream. Maybe you’ll sell your house and rent an apartment so you can travel three months out of the year. Maybe you’ll take an online job, buy a van, and drive cross-country. Maybe you’ll sell everything and move to a new continent. Maybe you’ll finally use those two weeks of vacation and take your kids to Yellowstone, just like you’ve always wanted to do.
What is that new place you’ve been dying to explore? How many hours do you spend combing through flights, looking at tickets to Belize? Don’t shake that wanderlust. You can’t shake that wanderlust! And why should you? It’s always that next trip, that next place, that next unforgettable moment. And as you go, you grow. You find you. You become who you want to be. Where is/are your dream place/s?
